First and foremost, we understand how difficult and frustrating it can be for customers to experience extended power outages, particularly when they result in food spoilage and other unexpected expenses, and we appreciate the opportunity to address these questions.
Over the past several months, northern Indiana has experienced multiple significant storm events that caused widespread damage to electric infrastructure, including downed trees, poles and power lines impacting some customers for several days due to the severity and complexity of the damage. These storms occurred amid a broader pattern of severe weather across Indiana and the Midwest, including tornadoes, high winds, flooding and other extreme weather events that have strained infrastructure throughout the region. In recognition of the widespread impacts, Governor Mike Braun issued disaster emergency declarations covering dozens of Indiana counties following major severe weather events, including a declaration affecting 63 counties after flooding, tornadic activity and damaging winds.
Given the questions raised regarding outage-related losses, it may be helpful to provide additional context regarding customer claims and available resources.
For severe weather events that result in extended outages, NIPSCO provides event-specific storm documentation and outage information on NIPSCO.com. Customers may use this information to help support requests for outage verification, employer documentation, insurance claims or other assistance programs. NIPSCO accepts claims for losses resulting from outages caused by NIPSCO. However, when outages are caused by severe weather or other acts of nature, NIPSCO does not reimburse customers for food spoilage or property damage. Customers may choose to contact their insurance provider to determine whether coverage is available under their policy.
NIPSCO closely monitors weather conditions and proactively positions crews and resources to respond to outages as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible. During severe weather events, like the ones we have experienced this spring and summer, our crews work around the clock to assess damage, make repairs and restore service as safely and quickly as conditions allow. Following several of these severe weather events, approximately half of affected customers were restored within a 12-24 hour window, with restoration efforts continuing until all customers were restored.
April 27 storm (50% of ~1,000 impacted customers restored within 12 hours)
March 10 storm (>67% of ~13,000 customers were restored within 12 hours)
June 10 storms (>65% of ~21,500 customers impacted restored within 12 hours)
June 11 storms (~50% of 86,640 customers impacted restored within 24 hours)
Although no electric system can withstand every severe weather event, NIPSCO continues to invest in reliability and resiliency improvements designed to reduce outage impacts and support faster restoration.
In addition to restoring power, NIPSCO remains committed to helping communities recover following severe weather events. After the March 10 storms in Lake Village, the NiSource Charitable Foundation and NIPSCO established the Lake Village Relief Fund with a $25,000 grant, while employees volunteered alongside local responders in community clean-up activities. Following the June 11 storms, the NiSource Charitable Foundation provided a $25,000 gift to the Salvation Army of Northwest Indiana, and NIPSCO employees distributed boxed lunches, toiletry kits, cleaning supplies and other household essentials, assisted with community outreach and helped remove debris across impacted neighborhoods.
We recognize that rising household costs continue to challenge many families. NIPSCO remains committed to helping manage energy bills through assistance programs, flexible payment options and other support resources. To support customers during high-use summer months, NIPSCO launched its $1.5 million shareholder-funded CARE Electric Cooling Program in June 2026. The program helps LIHEAP-eligible customers manage summer electricity costs and includes eliminating deposits for income-qualified gas and electric customers and waiving certain reconnection charges for electric customers.
We appreciate the opportunity to provide this additional context and encourage customers with questions about their specific circumstances to contact us at 1-800-4NIPSCO.
